In almost every consultation I do, at some point someone asks a version of the same question: “is this just how my hair is, or is something actually wrong?” It’s one of the hardest questions in hair care to answer honestly, because the real answer is usually both.
Some things about your hair were decided a long time ago and aren’t going to change no matter what you put on it. Other things are entirely about what’s happened to your hair since — and those are usually fixable. Getting the two confused is where most of the frustration comes from.

Fine hair and thinning hair get talked about like they’re the same thing, and they’re not. Fine hair is about the diameter of each individual strand — if you were born with hair that’s naturally finer than average, that’s genetics, full stop. Hair grows in cycles, and the active growth phase — called the anagen phase — can last anywhere from two to seven years depending on your genetics. At an average growth rate of around six inches a year, a two-year anagen phase caps out at roughly twelve inches, while a seven-year one can reach well past three feet. That range is inherited. It’s not a routine problem, and it’s not something any product can extend.
If you’ve always plateaued at roughly the same length no matter what you try, that ceiling might genuinely be yours. But most people never actually get close enough to their real ceiling to find out.
